Music fans in Hattiesburg have a wide array of concert options this Halloween.
Halloween shows at the Thirsty Hippo have become a tradition in the past few years. This year's show will mark both a sending off and return of two Hattiesburg bands. For The Petticoat Junkies, the show will be the group's last before setting off to open for The Mountain Goats in Austin and New Orleans, as mentioned in Tuesday's issue. For Dark Knights of Camelot, the band will be returning from a one-month tour across the Southeast.
"The staff [of the Thirsty Hippo] participates in the festivities, taking the event to the next level," said Dark Knights of Camelot singer Ben Shea.
"The whole point of our 25-show tour was to not only spread our name across the Southeast, but to prepare for the flailing bodies, sweat, and electric sex that is Halloween in Hattiesburg via the Thirsty Hippo."
Another Halloween tradition will continue with Chance Fisher at the Boom Boom Room. Last year, the band celebrated the holiday by covering Radiohead's 1995 album The Bends in its entirety. This year, the group plans for an experimental set featuring crowd participation and covers ranging from The Talking Heads to Ween. One can also expect a few surprises from the band.
"It's Halloween, you know? If you're not going to do something different on Halloween, when can you?," said Chance Fisher bassist Sam Adcock.
With its dark and frightful imagery, heavy metal may be the scariest of all musical genres. The Tavern is holding an appropriately spooky show with Amadeus St. Vitus and Agony Eclipsed, a duo of Hattiesburg metal bands.
If you're less interested in the scary side of Halloween than the fun side, maybe you'd be inclined to check out a pair of cover bands playing the night away. At the Bottling Company, flamboyant '80s cover band The Glitter Boys will be playing. At Mugshots, Greystreet will be bringing a set of Dave Matthews Band covers to the costumed crowd.
