1. The Golden Eagle basketball team had an 11 game win streak and improved their record to 16-3 on the season.

2. The Southern Miss football team capped off the first win season in school history with a win over the Nevada Wolfpack in the Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl, 24-17.

3. The Golden Eagle football team hired a new head coach, former South Carolina defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson, to replace former head coach Larry Fedora who took the North Carolina Head Coaching job.

4. Southern Miss hired Jeff Hammond to replace Richard Giannini, who announced his retirement before the break.

5. The Southern Miss football team got a big high school commitment over the break, as Mississippi's Mr. Football Anthony Alford of Petal announced on national television that he will be playing college football at USM starting next fall.  This signing could also help the baseball team if Alford plays both sports, as Alford is predicted to be drafted in the first three rounds of the MLB draft.
