Men’s basketball earns road win

 Southern Miss used a second-half comeback to secure a road win over Georgia State in Atlanta, Ga. Tuesday. 

After Georgia State jumped to a 52-41 lead with more than 12 minutes left in the second half, Southern Miss used a 9-2 run over the next 3 minutes to cut the deficit.

Southern Miss took a 68-65 lead with three minutes left when Jerrold Brooks hit a three pointer. USM would hold strong defensively, completing the come from behind victory.

Southern Miss was led by Brooks with a career-high 23 points. Jonathan Mills added nine rebounds, and Dewayne Davis added 12 points and five rebounds. Southern Miss’ bench also outscored Georgia State’s by 29 points.

RJ Hunter led Georgia State with 24 points and four rebounds.

The Eagles hit the road again to take on Wichita State at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 22.

 

Women’s basketball falls in OT

Southern Miss saw a 15-point lead diminish in the second half, as they would eventually fall in overtime 87-80 at Tennessee-Martin on Tuesday.

The Lady Eagles held a 15-point lead with 11:46 to play in the second half. Tennessee-Martin would consistently cut into the lead, tying the game with 1:37. The teams would trade baskets before Southern Miss guard Jamierra Faulkner missed a jumper with two seconds left, sending the game to overtime.

The teams would trade baskets throughout most of overtime, until Tennessee-Martin took a seven-point lead with just over a minute to play. Tennessee-Martin would outscore the Lady Eagles 16-9 in overtime.

Southern Miss was led by Faulkner with 36 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists. Tanecka Carey also added 25 points and four rebounds for the Lady Eagles.

Tennessee- Martin was led by Heather Butler with 24 points and seven assists and Jasmine Newsome with 23 points, six rebounds and five assists.

The Lady Eagles return home to face Central Arkansas on Saturday, Dec.  22. Game time is set for noon.
