Southern Miss kicked off the 2010 football season against South Carolina with a disappointing 41-13 defeat.

"They obviously were the better team tonight," said head coach Larry Fedora. "They made the plays that needed to be made, and we didn't make very many plays in all three phases of the game."

The Gamecock offense rushed 224 yards on the ground, racking up four touchdowns on the ground and dominating the Eagle defensive front. The Southern Miss offense, on the other hand, was only able to muster 67 yards on 27 carries.

"We just couldn't make the plays that we needed to," said junior quarterback Austin Davis.

After a South Carolina 3-and-out, Southern Miss drove 40 yards before an Austin Davis pass was picked off by USC safety DeVonte Holloman. Davis finished the game going 31 of 43 for 238 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

"There wasn't anything that we didn't expect," Fedora said. "In the end it just came down to them making more plays than us."

Southern Miss scored their only touchdown of the game on a 29-yard touchdown pass from Martevious Young to DeAndre Brown with 1:33 left in the game to make the final score 41-13 South Carolina.
