Dos and Don’ts of tailgate fashion

We have all seen that girl at a home football game-- you know, the one wearing the Ole Miss shirt as she screams, “Southern Miss to the Top!” That’s just not enough. Or there’s her friend who’s wearing a gold dress, gold heels and a gold necklace on top of her already golden hair. That’s just too much. Then there’s that girl who we all want to be-- the one in her cute black skirt, gold top and black necklace. Now, isn’t it refreshing to finally see someone look just right for a Southern Miss football game? There are several dos and don’ts in football fashion, and obviously, we all need a little refresher.
DO: Wear your school colors.
DON’T: Wear gold from head to toe, even if it’s the theme of the game. No color deserves that much attention.
DO: Wear stylish shoes that match your outfit.
DON’T: Wear any type of heel if you can’t walk in them. There’s nothing worse than seeing a girl limp in her wedges. They make flats for people like you.
DO: Keep cool.
DON’T: Look trashy. The weather is almost as raging as your hormones; we can tell due to the lack of material you have covering your cleavage. Didn’t your mother teach you that there’s a difference between classy and trashy?
DO: Wear undergarments.
DON’T: Wear panties that we can see. No one needs to know that you heart Hello Kitty. We should also be able to know that it’s Saturday due to the football game without having to read the day of the week on your underwear.
DO: Wear a cute, stylish shirt that is store-bought.
DON’T: Wear a shirt that you made yourself, unless it’s actually cute. I can’t tell you how many girls I have seen wearing shirts that look as though they have been dipped in a shredder. Then, to make matters worse, they wear that same “shirt” with a sports bra and leggings. That does not equal a cute outfit.
DO: Make your hair look good.
DON’T: Make your hair look “cutesy.” For example, don’t wear bows in your hair. You’re not four-years-old anymore. It’s time to grow up. No amount of spirit is appropriate for a trip back to kindergarten. My Maltese also wears bows in her hair, so just don’t.
DO: Wear sassy shorts that match your game day spirit.
DON’T: Go overboard with your outfit. This isn’t prom. Sparkly tops and shorts are cute and sassy, but tie-dye denim shorts? I saw two people fall victim to this tragedy last game day, and it was two too many. According to the Game Day Fashion Police, you pushed it a little too far.
DO: Have spirit.
DON’T: Paint your body. As a woman, I see other women who feel the need to act like men and paint their bodies, but don’t. You don’t look cute in Nike shorts, a sports bra and a gold-painted body. That’s not spirited. That’s just wrong.
As Marilyn Monroe said, “I don’t mind living in a man’s world, as long as I can be a woman in it.” So, ladies, take some friendly criticism and realize that not all of us were born with a passion for fashion. We have friends for a reason. They’re here to tell us when our outfits are truly amazing or truly tragic. For the upcoming home game, take these dos and don’ts into consideration as you are picking out your next game day outfit.
