¡Fiesta en América! Time to celebrate

Tal como cantaba el artista puertorriqueño Chayanne en los años de los 80ta, esta semana habrá una Fiesta en América. El departamento de lenguas extranjeras y literatura está organizando una semana llena de actividades para celebrar las culturas y tradiciones de todos aquellos países que hablan la lengua española. La invitación es abierta a todo el público y no es necesario saber hablar el español para disfrutar de todas las actividades.

Para comenzar el programa, el lunes 16 de noviembre se estrenara la película "Volver", un aclamado éxito del cine español. En este filme disfrutaremos la presencia de la bellísima actriz española Penélope Cruz, ganadora de un premio Oscar como mejor actriz, y del brillante director Pedro Almodóvar, considerado uno de los mejores directores del cine actual. Algunas escenas de esta película pueden ser fuertes para los jóvenes así que recuerden esto antes de decidir entrar a la sala de cine. La película se mostrara en el Thad Cochran Center, salón 210. La cinta empezara a rodar a partir de las 5:30 de la noche, no olviden que la entrada es gratuita.

Para el martes, las actividades continúan. Habrá una pequeña reunión a partir de las 10 de la mañana donde profesores y alumnos del programa de español estarán conviviendo y platicando del mundo hispano. Si el buen tiempo lo permite, estarán localizados justamente afuera de la entrada principal del Liberal Arts Building. Esta reunión terminara a las 2 de la tarde. Por la noche, la muestra de cine continua, pero en esta ocasión viajaremos a la bella Argentina. La película es "Nueve Reinas" una comedia que sin duda deleitara a más de uno. Es quizás una de las mejores muestras que podremos observar del cine Argentino, esta película empezara a rodar en el International Center salón 101 a partir de las 5:30 de la tarde. Recuerden, sin costo alguno.

El miércoles será un día inolvidable, a mediodía se montara un ensamble lleno de sorpresas para el público. Justo en frente de la biblioteca se encuentra la plaza Power House, aquí tendrán  música, bailes y actuaciones representativas con varios profesores y alumnos de la Universidad del Sur de Mississippi. No se pueden perder estos espectaculares eventos que los dejaran con el ojo cuadrado. Si les gusta el arte y disfrutan de las culturas que ofrece el mundo, este evento les brindara mucha satisfacción, no se lo pueden perder. Las actividades terminaran aproximadamente a las 3 de la tarde. Esta misma noche se mostrara el último filme internacional con la película "Belle Epoque". El Dr. Chris Miles del departamento de español dará una pequeña introducción a la película antes de empezar a rodarla. El igual que el martes, la cinta se mostrara a las 5:30 de la tarde en el International Center salón 101. No se requiere boleto para asistir.

Y para terminar una FIESTA! Empiecen su fin de semana desde el jueves asistiendo al RC Lounge en el edificio Union a partir de las 5 de la tarde. No olviden traer ropa cómoda para bailar, cantar y divertirse el maximo.

Just as it was sang in the late 80s by pop star Chayanne (Dance with me) this week there will be a Fiesta en America (Party in America, the continent). The department of foreign languages and literatures is organizing a week full of activities to celebrate the traditions and cultures of Spanish speaking countries. The event is open to everyone and there is no requirement of previous Spanish knowledge to enjoy the activities.

The program will start on Monday November 16th with the movie "Volver", one of the most important films exported from Spain. In this movie we can enjoy the presence of top Spanish actress Penélope Cruz, a winner of the Oscar for best actress, and the brilliant mind of Pedro Almodóvar. He has been considered one of the best and most controversial directors of our times. Some images and scenes of this film might have content not suitable for young adults, so please consider this before entering the theater. The show will start at 5:30 pm in the Thad Cochran Center room 210. Don´t forget, free admission.

For Tuesday, activities continue with a gathering in the terrace in front of the LAB building. From 10:00 am till 2:00pm students, graduates and faculty of the DFLL will conduct various activities regarding the Spanish speaking world and provide plenty of information for students interested in exchange programs or basic questions about Spanish speaking countries. If weather conditions affect the gathering, the meeting will be moved to the main lobby of the LAB building. At night the fun continues; a new movie will be presented, but this time we will head out to South America. "Nueve Reinas" is an Argentinean comedy that will delight more than one in the audience. This film will be shown in the International Center room 101 at 5:30pm. Remember, free admission.

On Wednesday the DFLL faculty and staff will provide a wide variety of shows to the general public in front of the Cook Library in the Power House plaza. This event will start at noon and will carry on until 3:00pm. During these hours, professors and students of Southern Miss will participate in songs, skits, plays and many more theatrical activities, as well as games, to entertain people of all ages. You can´t afford to miss all this free events, it will be an experience to cherish, I promise. To top the cake, Dr. Christopher Miles will be giving a brief introduction to the Spanish movie "Belle Epoque" in the International Center room 101 at 5:30pm, please come and join the DFLL for the last movie night.
