The Student Printz is the official newspaper of the campus of The University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg.
The publication is entirely student run and written and is published twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
USM has had an official campus newspaper since 1918 when it was known as The State Teacher's College News; it has been publishing under its current name since 1927.
Most people believe the name of the paper is a play on the word “prints”, but this is not quite true.
In the late 20s, a Broadway musical, “The Student Prince” was among the most popular. An editor named Olen Brewer changed the name of the paper to that of both the musical and the pipe he was smoking from in late 1926.
Several names were submitted for the student body of 300-400 to vote upon that year, and The Student Printz won.
To avoid conflicts with the Dorothy Donnelly musical, “The Student Prince”, he changed the name to its German spelling, and the title has stuck with the paper since it was officially changed in 1927.
