Homecoming campaign signs were visible outside polling locations across campus Wednesday.

More than 2,600 students came out Tuesday to cast their votes for the eight people who will represent the Southern Miss student body on the field at this year’s Homecoming football game scheduled for Oct. 20.

The race will continue today as 12 students advance to the runoff elections for the positions that were too close to determine a winner in Tuesday’s regular election. The six positions being voted on again today are: Mr. Southern Miss, Miss Southern Miss, Homecoming Queen, Graduate Maid, Senior Maid and Freshman Maid.

Jordan West, election commissioner for SGA, said the election Tuesday was the biggest one the school had seen, and about 100 more people than last year came out to vote.

“I was really pleased with it,” West said. “Everybody had really good sportsmanship.”

Two positions were determined Tuesday without a runoff as Serena Williams was elected Junior Maid and Emily Radcliffe was chosen to be Sophomore Maid.

The theme for Homecoming this year is “Let the good times soar,” and the game will be played at 6 p.m. against Marshall.

“Something about Homecoming makes everyone excited,” said Tim Wells, executive director of programming for SGA. “I know all these candidates are passionate about Southern Miss, they all bleed black and gold, and I’m excited for whoever gets to represent our student body.”
