Just hours after a student was shot and killed in his dorm at Mississippi State University, a freshman student just a few hours away at Jackson State University in Jackson, Miss. was also killed.
A student was reportedly shot to death and another was said to be injured. The shooting took place at the Palisades student residency, just off the JSU campus.
Despite the proximity of the two Mississippi universities, the killings do not appear to be connected.
The shooting at MSU in Starkville took place just before 10:30 Saturday night. That student was shot multiple times in Evans Hall, an all male dormitory on the north side of the campus that holds about 300 students.
The victim was transferred to a nearby hospital, but at 11:17, MSU's Maroon Alert system announced that he had died.
The family requested that the victim's identity be withheld until they could notify the extended family.
Three male suspects were seen leaving the campus in a late model blue Crown Victoria after fleeing Evans Hall, where the shooting took place, according to one alert. Law enforcement are currently looking for them.
MSU officials are expected to release more details at a press briefing at 10 a.m.
