As the Southern Miss football team prepares for Saturday’s homecoming matchup with Tulane, another Golden Eagle learned he wouldn’t be able to play for the rest of the year.
Golden Eagle senior cornerback Michael McGee will miss the rest of the 2009 season, Southern Miss head coach Larry Fedora confirmed Tuesday.
“It’s bad,” Fedora said. “It’s a torn ACL and couple of other things, but he won’t be with us in any other game.”
Southern Miss head trainer Todd McCall said the official word is a torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament, or ACL.
Magee suffered the injury defending a pass during the third quarter of last weeks game against Memphis.
The senior from Magee, Miss. is the third Southern Miss player to suffer a season-ending injury.
Quarterback Austin Davis tore a ligament in his midfoot, and defensive end Roshaad Byrd broke an ankle.
“I hate it for him, Austin (Davis) and Roshaad (Byrd),” Fedora said. “As much effort as these guys have put in, everyone takes it for granted, but you can’t because it only takes on play.”
Replacing Magee could be a chore, but Fedora said he has confidence in red-shirt freshman Marcal Robinson and safety Jamie Collins to pick up the slack.
“Mike has done a tremendous job for us at the nickel corner position,” Fedora said. “We have young players who can step up, but he’ll be missed.”
