Men's basketball wins conference opener at Rice

Just one game after setting six school records as a team, the Southern Miss men’s basketball team set another school record for field goal percentage in a game (69.6 percent) in a 75-52 win at Rice.

Southern Miss started the game on a 7-0 run before giving up a basket to Rice. The game would then stay at a 7-2 standstill for over four minutes of gameplay.

Southern Miss would then use an 11-3 run to blow the game open. The Eagles would lead the game 32-33 at halftime. USM would use a 12-5 run to start the second half before slowly putting the game away.

Daveon Boardingham led the Golden Eagles with 16 points and seven rebounds. Michael Craig added 15 points and 8 rebounds and Dwayne Davis and Jerrold Brooks poured in 11 points a piece.

Austin Ramljak led Rice with 14 points.

Southern Miss moves to 12-4 on the season and 1-0 in Conference USA play. The Eagles next plays host to Houston at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Reed Green Coliseum.
