Something tells me if the jobs of our president and/or athletic director were in question, this would be a bigger deal to them. Who cares about the other departments that are closing, tenured employees being laid off, or students leaving? I've been to two games since I have been here. It is complete BS to force students to pay for events they don't even go to when people are losing their jobs. Richard Giannini said "In order to make up a $3 million reduction, 13,636 students would have to purchase a football season ticket." He's only looking at one side of the issue. How about doing a better job of promoting season tickets to the residents of Hattiesburg (and other surrounding areas) to offset the costs? Keep cutting departments and the university's enrollment will go down. That means less money for the athletic department. At that point, I'm sure students will just start paying even more for unused tickets to all manner of sports. I came here for a degree, not to go to football games. I could do that without paying tuition. I'm not knocking our athletes. I'm just knocking the people who say they are doing everything in their power to save money and jobs, while continually proving otherwise (i.e. leaving the damn lights on in the stadium at night, etc.) Maybe the athletic department should just suck it up, you know, like the professors who won't be here much longer. By all means, continue to limit degree plan options for future students. Hey, we will still have football and polymer science, right?
