Students can celebrate International Education Week today in the Thad Cochran Center atrium from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. and see international students in their native attire as well as sample foods from around the world.

Sponsored by International Education, the event will allow students to test their knowledge on major world and geographical issues, with anyone scoring over 80 percent receiving a prize.

Students interested in studying with the British Studies program can also attend an informational in the Thad Cochran Center today at 12:15 where pizza will be served.

British Studies celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, and was the flagship program which began the center for International Education, said Holly Buckner International Education program coordinator.

"Southern Miss offers many opportunities for students to study abroad and we want the USM community to come out today and learn about the different locations they can earn credit with through our programs," said Buckner.

"These places are not unattainable and we will work with each student to help them realize their study abroad dream."

International Education Week is observed across the U.S. and around the world during November and is an opportunity to celebrate benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. The joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education is part of efforts to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn and exchange experiences in the United States.

"This is a particularly exciting year to participate in IE Week festivities, since 2006 was declared the "Year of Study Abroad" late last year by the US Senate in a unanimous vote," said International Education Director Susan Steen.

According to www.yearofstudyabroad.org, "the resolution boosts the visibility of study abroad in the United States and sets the stage for further action on the national level to expand study abroad opportunities."
