Between the lines: Most fall short of holy ideals

Jennifer Morgan

Issue date: 4/12/07 Section: Opinion
"Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor (active) homosexuals, nor (passive) homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God." 1 Corinthians 6:9-10.

Maybe it's just me, but according to the Bible the list of those who won't enter the kingdom of Heaven doesn't seem to just include homosexuals.

American society is rife with the majority of these deadly sins.

It's hard to find shows or movies devoid of sexual content. The selling of sex in this country is a multi-billion dollar industry even the most faithful have a hand in.

We've had presidents, congressmen and religious leaders who have been adulterers. The same men and woman who made laws and judgments on how to regulate morality are the people we've caught over and over again with their pants down.

Many politicians sell us family values on a silver platter. They stand happily with their perfect families on the steps of their perfect houses in what makes a perfect picture, but usually it's nothing more than a perfect illusion.

Preachers scream through the television about the state of your soul, but by the end they are begging you to give them money in the name of Jesus.

Commercials, magazines and entire television networks urge us to covet what celebrities and the super-rich have, and they drive us to attain these items by whatever means necessary.

Presidential elections now cost anywhere from 250-300 million dollars. Major corporations and lobbyists often provide this money in order to own a piece of a candidate. If elected, those contributors will use every bit of their power over the president to influence legislation, White House support and public perception.

Your pick for president, no matter how much you like him, won't be fighting for you want, but what corporations want.

I always thought that everything up to and including being human was a sin in Christianity. It's weird then that some people choose to be so up in arms about homosexuality in particular. (Continued…)
