Letter to the editor: Writer mistaken about Islam
Issue date: 4/12/07 Section: Opinion

Although I appreciate the debunking of misunderstandings of the Islamic faith (being that I am a Muslim), I would like to get word to Cordelia Haecker, author of the recent opinion piece: ["Muslim beliefs are often misunderstood" April 5, 2007]
She states "While Muslims do not believe Jesus was the Messiah", which is in fact not true. A quick google for "define:messiah" will show that messiah is the Hebrew form of the greek Christ both of which mean "anointed one". Many kings of old where "messiah" or "Christ" but there is only one "the Messiah" or "the Christ" as foretold in prophecy, sent to the Jews, and his name was Jesus. Muslims must believe all of this, as the Quran states that we must believe in the prophets that came before Muhammad including Jesus.
I think that there is a misunderstanding of what the word "Messiah" means because it is not a concept that Muslims would have any issue with.
To recap, we believe that Jesus was:
1. The Messiah (or Christ)
2. A prophet of God
3. A messenger of God
4. Sent to the Jews
5. The word of God (one of the names he's known by)
And we believe that Jesus will return, just as the Christians do. Though we don't believe that Jesus was God or the son of God or the Trinity, etc. etc.
Hope that helps to clear that up.
