Charles Arinder, 23, is an entrepreneur who has lived here for five years and will open the Caliente Grill next to campus in a month. He chose to open a business in Hattiesburg because of the growth opportunities, student atmosphere and the draw to families and retired citizens.

He plans on having a take-out service for convenience and will also be offering certain discounts "such as a one-month-clinic-worker or Rotary Club discount to appeal to different people."
Arinder said, "The liveliness offered by the student turnover every four years adds to the changing trends, and influences the entire area."

A June 14 USM press release quoted Bob Pierce, director of the Southern Miss Alumni Association: "Hattiesburg is a great place to live, regardless of one's age, and the University of Southern Mississippi is a big part of that reality.

"Southern Miss alumni are moving back to Hattiesburg all the time to be near the institution they love, and other adults… are moving here to enjoy the benefits of living in such a great college city," Pierce said in the release.

Ashley Verrette, a senior accounting major from Destrehan, La., feels that USM is influential to the community.

"The university brings in money to Hattiesburg that otherwise wouldn't be here, such as restaurants. This affects those over 40 who are the owners of many of these businesses.

"The university also exposes locals to art that they would have to go farther to see, otherwise," she said.

Samuel Zeanah, a junior entertainment industry major and music history and theory minor from Magnolia Springs, Ala., has benefited from the growth of Hattiesburg's culture.

"When I moved here, I wasn't quite aware of the music scene, but it has gotten bigger and better," he said.

Zeanah said when he plays at places like The Thirsty Hippo and Keg & Barrel he has a mixed crowd of college students and older adults.

"I am willing to play at places with a broader demographic. I'm just trying to play for everyone," he said.
