In a gesture of appreciation, the Panhellenic Council will be donating $1,300 to the USM Alumni Association in their meeting today, at 5:30 p.m. The donation comes from a newly implemented fundraising program within the formal sorority recruitment process.

Greek life manager Erin Rust said the donation is in response to a campaign of the Alumni Association to raise money to expand and restore the Ogletree house.

"The Alumni Association came to the sororities and fraternities on campus and asked to be considered for one of their philanthropic projects," said Rust.

Since each Greek organization within the Panhellenic Council already has a philanthropic outreach project, the task of raising money for the Ogletree house needed to come from more creative means, Rust said.

Haley Lewis, CPC vice president of public relations, said the Panhellenic Council came up with the idea to increase the application fee for girls going through recruitment.

"The fee used to be $50," Lewis said. "We raised it to $55 and the extra $5 went toward the donation."

The Alumni Association is a non profit organization that exists to benefit the University of Southern Mississippi.

"(We) engage in a number of activities for the betterment of the university," said Bob Pierce, director of the Alumni Association.

The Alumni Association produces a magazine called "The Talon," is heavily involved in homecoming festivities, gives scholarships to children of Alumni and facilitates a student organization called The Legacy.

The Alumni Association is housed in the Ogletree House which was the first president of the university's house and is one of the five original buildings on campus.

Pierce said they hope to double the size of the facility, from 6,000 square feet to 12,000 square feet, restore it to original appearance and condition and add a multi-purpose room, a kitchen and new bathrooms.

Pierce said they are coming to the end of the campaign, which was to raise $3 million for the expansion and restoration project.
"We have $2.85 million committed," said Pierce.

The Panhellenic Council's donation will be added to the already committed donations.
