The College of Education and Psychology will conduct its first Alumnus of the Year and Hall of Fame ceremonies Friday. Dr. Wanda Maulding, interim dean of the college said this event will show how psychology and education work closely together.
"There are lots of ways in which the two partner, and we are proud to finally have a ceremony to honor those in those fields," Maulding said.
Maulding said the nomination process begins with a public relations committee that includes members from each of the six departments within the college: psychology; technology education; library and information science; child and family studies; education leadership and research; curriculum; and instruction and special education. These departments then vote on the nominations, with a maximum of one inductee from each department.
The Alumnus of the year, Hank Bounds, earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of Southern Mississippi and his doctorate degree from the University of Mississippi. Bounds now serves as the state superintendent of education.
Bounds works extensively with the department of education's teacher redesign plans and issues that impact Mississippi's student outcomes, primarily for the Gulf Coast Operations, Dr. Maulding said. She added, Bounds is "a very forward thinking visionary leader that has what is best for kids in his scope and that is the end goal for all educators."
"Dr. Bounds is truly a courageous leader doing whatever necessary to improve student achievement in our state," said Dr. Ron Styron, interim associate dean for the college, in a recent press release.
The four inductees into the Hall of Fame members include, Pamela Pridgen, Dr. Anthony A. Calabrese, Paul M. Blount, and David Mullins.
Dr. Calabrase received his doctorate from Southern Miss and is the clinical director of the psychology department and the superintendent of schools at Pine Grove Outreach Center. He said he chose to study psychology out of an interest in "why people do what they do."
"It is very special and I'm flattered to be recognized by peers and hope to live up to this honor," Calabrase said.
Anyone interested in attending the event should contact Southern Miss Ticket Office.
