The Southern Miss men and women’s track and field team competed in the C-USA indoor championships in Birmingham, Ala. this past weekend.
The Southern Miss women’s team finished as conference runner ups with a team score of 93.50 while the men’s team finished fourth with a team score of 80 points. Together the track and field team combined for 16 podium finishes with four event winners.
“We had inspired performances all day,” Head Coach Jon Stuart said. “Once the momentum builds and the crowd started yelling ‘to the top,’ I knew it was going to be a special day. Our kids simply have a lot of heart and were not going to miss out on that podium.”
In the men’s 60m dash, junior McKinley West won and set the school record with a time of 6.66. Senior Cra’Vorkian Carson finished in second running 6.69 and junior Chedlin Sagesse ran 6.78 finishing fifth, respectively. West also won the 200m dash with a time of 20.85. Carson finish in fourth running 21.38 and senior Alexander Richemond finished in fifth running 21.59.
In the men’s 4X400 relay, Southern Miss finished in third place with a time of 3:14.
In the women’s short distance, sophomore Keiyana Gaskin finished second in the 60m dash with a time of 7.38 and was just beaten by .01 seconds by Cecilia Francis of Middle Tennessee. Gaskin doubled in the 200m and finished third, running a time of 23.86. In the 400m dash, juniors Chanelle Ricketts and Rian Robinson ran 55.03 and 55.45 to finish third and fifth respectively.
In relays, the women’s 4X400 team ran 3:44 and placed fourth but the teamwas just edged out of third place by .07 seconds by the University of Texas at El Paso.
In the 60m hurdles, sophomore Caleb Parker finished in third with a time of 8.01. Parker doubled in the high jump and took second place with a jump of 2.15m. Junior John Warren won the triple jump with a jump of 16.34m. His jump broke the school and conference record and ranks the second best in the nation.
In the women’s high jump, sophomore Jamari Drake took second place with a jump of 1.71m and senior Trista Barry finished in seventh place with a jump of 1.68m.
In the men’s one mile run, sophomore Patton Little finished in sixth running a 4:13.
The women’s distance team was led by a second-place finish in the distance medley and a third-place finish by Courtney Filliben who ran 2:09. In the DMR, the team ran 11:43 with UTSA taking first place in the event. In the women’s one mile run freshman Kate Mattox finished fifth running 4:58 and sophomore Regen McGee finished eighth with a time of 5:03.
In the men’s weight throw, senior Donald Daley threw 18.96m and finished in fourth place.
For the women’s throwers, senior Alexis Chiles and Brashe Wood took second and third place in the shot put with throws of 15.35m and 15.13m. Junior Danisha Jones finished in sixth place with a throw of 14.78m. In the women’s weight throw, sophomore Nadia Maffo won the event with a throw of 20.29m and Jones finished in fourth place with a throw of 19.70m.
“This team is very special. We set a goal for ourselves and stayed focused even when some things didn’t go our way,” Assistant Coach John Ellis said. “I’m unbelievably proud of all event areas and our staff. John Warren setting a new C-USA Indoor record in the triple jump was such an incredible thing to be a part of.”
The team will now prepare for the NCAA Indoor championships held at Texas A&M on March 10.
