Local rock n’ roll group The Boom Chicka Booms are set to release their debut album “Devil Woman and a Smoking Gun” tomorrow night at the Thirsty Hippo.

Consisting of guitarist Matt Butzlaff, drummer Nick Everett, and bassist Galen Martin, the Boom Chicka Booms combineselements of rockabilly, surf, and pop-fused rock n’ roll.

“I started playing the guitar when I was 13 years old in the small town of Denton, Miss. where live music didn’t exist,” said bassist Galen Martin. “I left for college when

I was 18 and started playing in cover bands, but when I moved to Hattiesburg, I met Matt and the Boom Chicka Booms were born.”

After a few jam sessions that included the impromptu songwriting of Butzlaff and Martin, tunes such as the Dick Dale influenced “Draggin Me Down” and alternative-pop flavored “Runaway” quickly fell into place.

“It’s something that was not influenced by anything other than just Galen and me getting together and writing what we thought sounded good,” said Butzlaff. “No matter the influence, if we liked it, we stuck to it.”

With those influences ranging from Reverend Horton Heat to Johnny Cash, the Boom Chicka Booms soon developed their own unique way of playing their contemplations of hypothetical situations involving the opposite sex.

“The title for our album comes from the track ‘Burning Me,’ which describes a form of dramatic temptation,” said Martin. “But there is an acoustic-folk melody to mix it up a bit.”

“Devil Woman and a Smoking Gun” not only highlights the themes of “regret and bad women,” but also features melodic ballads of life and passing away.

“Lyrically, the strongest song on the album is ‘The War,’”Martin said. “It was written for my best friend who died in a car wreck in 2007. It explains that it’s hard to see through pain in order to find memories.”

Even though the group is thankful to have finally completed their debut album with record label South City Records, The Boom Chicka Booms are only just beginning.

“I’ve always played other peoples tunes, and this has been my first opportunity to really focus on creating something on my own,” said Martin. “It’s different, and I enjoy it.”

The Boom Chicka Booms will take the stage at 10 p.m. “Devil Woman and a Smoking Gun” is available at T-Bone’s Records and will be available for purchase at the show. To learn more, visit myspace.com/theboomchickabooms.
