This week: Southern Miss sports in brief

Volleyball

The Southern Miss volleyball team took two of three matches in a tournament at UT-Arlington over the weekend. Jasmine Crowell was named to the All-Tournament team for her consistent play over the tournament.

In game one, the Lady Eagles lost to Northwestern State in straight sets (25-23, 25-20, 25-23). Elizabeth Rinaudo had a match high 16 digs on the match.

Game two was a three set win over Marist (25-18, 25-18, 25-19). Freshman Lydia Bonner had a match high 17 kills on the match.

Game three was against host-team UT-Arlington, which USM won in three sets (25-21, 25-12, 25-23). Kristen Fleming had 37 assist on the game.

Soccer

The Lady Eagles soccer team was shut out over the weekend, dropping both Friday night’s game against South Alabama as well as Sunday’s game against Mississippi State.

Against South Alabama, Lindsey Schwaner recorded 20 saves, but 12 of the 17 South Alabama shots were on frame. Kristyn Flacker recorded both goals in the second half for the Jaguars.

It took double overtime on Sunday to determine a winner, when Jasmine Simmons finally found the net for the Bulldogs. Southern Miss recorded 11 shots on the game, but was unable to score.

Cross Country

The Lady Eagle cross country team attended the Auburn Cross Country Invitational last Friday, where they finished the 4k race in third place as a team.

Six Southern Miss runners competed, with Stephanie Ledgerwood recording her second top-5 finish of the season. Ledgerwood finished in fifth place with a time of 14:48.0.

Other runners for the Eagles included Rebecca Ulrich (10th place, 15:07.3), Krista Moylan (16th place, 15:14.9), Jocelyn Lockhart (21st place, 15:31.8), Kate Canavin (36th place, 16:09.8) and Sarah Smith (17:11.6).
