The Southern Miss volleyball team looked to carry over the momentum found in their last outing into Lafayette, Louisiana for the Bon Temps Invitational.  They girls closed the Southern Miss Invitational last weekend with a win against Louisiana Tech.  Hurricane Isaac moved the games to earlier times but the Lady Eagles still took the court against McNeese State on Friday.

Southern Miss opened the match with two straight set wins in easy fashion to the sound of 25-25 and 25-28.  The Cowgirls of McNeese State played up to Southern Miss’ level in the third set which saw 16 ties and four lead changes and took the set after two USM attack errors to the score of 25-23.  The Golden Eagles couldn’t recover as the Cowgirls closed the match in five sets 15-25, 18-25, 25-23, 25-19, 15-13.  Senior Halie Ecker led the way for the Eagles with 21 kills.

The Lady Eagles started Saturday with a four set loss to Houston Baptist 23-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-21 and finished the day with a three set loss to the host Louisiana-Lafayette 25-23, 25-16, 26-24.  The allowance of big runs plagued the Eagles on Saturday as both Houston Baptist and Lafayette used them to take the sets they won.  Freshman Lydia Bonner turned in 40 kills on the weekend which earned her All-Tournament honors.  She was the only member on the All-Tournament Team for the Eagles.  Sophomore Setter Kristin Fleming recorded 133 assists for the weekend along with her first two double-doubles in assists and digs on Saturday.

Southern Miss fell to 1-5 on the season.  They travel to Arlington, Texas next weekend for the UT Arlington Tournament.  The Lady Eagles face Northwestern St on Friday and then Marist and host UT Arlington on Saturday.
