Southern Miss senior baseball player Michael Gilbert incurred a head injury during a team conditioning session on Hattiesburg campus Thursday morning, according to a USM sports press release.

He was taken to Forrest General Hospital and transported to University Medical Center in Jackson. Bill and Melissa Gilbert, parents of Michael Gilbert, said their son moved out of the Neuroscience Critical Care Unit to another room Sunday, according to a USM sports press release. He continues to show slow, but steady improvement.

Gilbert’s parents would like to express their sincere appreciation to the USM family, according to the press release. The parents said they are humbled by the tremendous outpouring of love that has been expressed to Michael and their family through prayers, visits, cards and phone calls.

According to the Hattiesburg American Twitter account, Gilbert was struck in the head by a log during a conditioning drill that took place in M.M. Roberts Stadium. Three players were carrying a log, one lost his footing and the  log fell on Gilbert. Bill McGillis, Southern Miss director of athletics, said trainers were there and reacted quickly.

Gilbert, a native of Saucier, Mississippi, is an infielder for the Southern Miss Golden Eagles baseball team.
