L. Lamar Wilson 3 web

Writer L. Lamar Wilson signs copies of his book “Sacreligion” for students at the Southern Miss Center for Writers’ visiting writers series on Wednesday in the Gonzales Auditorium. Wilson is both a well-accomplished poet and journalist and has won 5 different major awards in the past 6 years. For his portion of the visiting writers series, Wilson read aloud many of his poems including “Times Like These: Marianna, Florida” and “Cake.” Wilson’s Poems strike nerves that are not always comfortable for the audience, particularly when covering topics like rape, homosexuality and religion, but he discusses them in a way that makes his listeners feel the pain and struggle within his words as if they are experiencing them first-hand. His ability to draw his audience into empathizing with his poems regardless of their personal sexuality or world views is what sets him apart as an amazing poet and writer. -Aaron J. Stewart
